What is Biochar?

Biochar is charcoal made from plant-based organic matter converted through pyrolysis (burning) in a low, to no, oxygen kiln. The process converts the material into a fixed carbon form with a porous structure useful for storing nutrients, microbes, and water to create a productive soil environment for plants while sequestering carbon in a stable state. Biochar nourishes soils, protects water quality, gives value to biomass waste, produces clean energy, and can sequester carbon for thousands of years.

What Can Biochar Systems Do?

  • Fight the climate crisis

  • Produce an enhancer for soil fertility to support soil tilth, including moisture content, aeration, microbes, rate of drainage and infiltration.

  • Sequester carbon from bio-waste

  • Create clean, renewable energy

How to Use Biochar:

  1. Fertilizer

  2. Peet substitute for potted plants

  3. Compost additive - mix it into your compost pile

  4. Odor reduction - animal bedding, manure

  5. And more
